The Computer made the weather

Here's a look at the supercomputers we work on at the University of Utah's Center for High Performance Computing. Weather models are run on these computers for research. Weather models help us understand how the earth's atmosphere changes and creates our daily weather.

Animated GFS

A friend showed me this neat website--a map of the earth with real-time GFS analysis, here.
You can change the wind levels and different variables to plot. This map shows today's 500 mb wind streamlines and relative humidity.

It's been quite warm the last few days. Salt Lake International Airport broke records the last two days, but hasn't hit 70 yet.
How has Spanish Fork looked? Well, it's been warm just like everywhere else in Utah. Almost hit 70 F yesterday, got close again today, but the clouds have filled the sky and we won't get any warmer.

Happy National Weather Person Day!

Support your local meteorologist and give them a high-five! They would appreciate a delicious cheesecake.

These pictures are from my latest adventure setting up a new weather station in the SunCrest development in Draper.

Polluted valley begins to clear out due to the southerly wind.

Thick rime on the old pyranometer

The old, broken station is taken down...

...and "new" working instruments are put up.

Just have to program the equipment, and whala, a working station.

gotta take the selfie

I can breath again!

The weather has been on our side. Here we are in the middle of inversion season and we've had some pretty clean air to breath the last few days. This is thanks to a few small storms that have mixed out the valley inversions.

Sounding from yesterdays weather balloon at the airport shows we mixed out all the way up to 700 mb. It was a warm day with the airport almost hitting 60 F.

Still, it is strange to be in February and not have snow on the ground. I went to school today with just a jacket!
